Silent Suffering: Why Smiling Through Pain Isn’t Healing

So many of us know what it feels like to smile on Sunday mornings while crying ourselves to
sleep on Sunday nights. In The Unexpected Stranger, I shared pieces of my own story—how I
wore the mask of the “good wife,” the “faithful believer,” and the “strong woman,” holding it all
together on the outside while I was slowly breaking inside. I thought silence was strength, but
silence isn’t healing—it suffocates.

The Mask of Strength

From the time we’re young, many of us are taught to be strong. To carry the weight, to endure, to
push through. And in return, people clap for us, calling us “resilient,” “independent,” or “the
strong one.” But what they don’t see are the tears we cry alone in the bathroom, the ache in our
chest when we’re forced to hold in the truth, or the exhaustion of always being “okay.”
The truth is, that mask of strength doesn’t protect us—it hides us. It keeps us silent when we
should be speaking. It makes us performers instead of healers. And over time, it steals the very
joy we were created to live in.

The Cost of Silence

Pretending everything is fine has a price tag. And sis, the cost is heavy. It costs you peace. It
costs you authentic relationships. It costs you the freedom to breathe and be yourself.
When you keep quiet about your pain, people only know the polished version of you. They don’t
see the storms you’re weathering. And because they don’t see it, you carry it alone. That silence
keeps you bound to roles you never asked for—and keeps you from stepping into the freedom
God already promised you.

Breaking the Cycle

Here’s the good news: silence doesn’t have to have the last word. You can start breaking the
cycle today.

  • Journal your truth. Writing is one of the safest ways to release what you’ve been
carrying. Put it on paper before it eats you alive in silence.
  • Find a safe space. Whether it’s a trusted friend, a therapist, or a faith leader—find
someone who will hold your truth without judgment.
  • Practice small courage. Maybe you don’t shout your truth to the world all at once, but
you can start by whispering it to yourself until it feels strong enough to say out loud.
Every time you choose to give your truth a voice, you’re breaking chains that have held you for
    years.

Faith Perspective

God never asked us to pretend. He doesn’t heal what we hide. Scripture says:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
That means your brokenness doesn’t disqualify you—it draws Him closer. When you open your
mouth, even in weakness, you invite His strength in. When you give your silence a voice, you
give Him room to move.
Conclusion: Let Your Truth Breathe
Sis, if you’ve ever smiled while silently breaking, hear me: you’re not alone. I’ve been there.
And I want you to know—it’s time to stop shrinking into silence. Healing begins the moment
you choose honesty over appearance, truth over pretense.
Take off the mask. Tear up the script. Let your truth breathe.
✨ Your story doesn’t lose its power when you speak it. It becomes the very thing that sets you
free.
